INSPIRING MOTHERS AND THEIR STORIES.
WE SIT DOWN WITH WOMEN FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO DISCUSS LIFE, WORK AND MOTHERHOOD
Self-confessed “Instagram Mum” Bohannah Geritson (@thesimplefolk_) gifts us daily with beautiful images of her children Indiana (3) & Archer (almost 2) and their family life in Western Australia.
We sat down with Bohannah for a #cheekychinwag to discuss her photography, the story behind her blog, The Simple Folk and motherhood.
The world of Instagram offers a form of connection between people seeking inspiration or advice, especially for mothers. “Everyone has a different reason for being on IG. For me, I've always loved taking and editing photos and Instagram has allowed me to share my work” Bo explains.
“Growing up, I secretly had a dream to pursue a career in fashion photography, so the world has a funny way of working out because now I mostly photograph my children in beautiful outfits. I would love to extend my passion of photography in the future but for now I am mostly self-taught. I've always loved the editing process and creating beautiful images brings me so much joy.”
Having two children so close in age and another on the way, motherhood has had a profound effect on Bo.
“Every day my children teach me to be more patient, to love harder, to find joy in tiny things and to savour every moment. To let go of any negativity because there is too much in this life to be grateful and happy for.”
For someone who inspires many people daily with her stunning photographs, Bo finds her inspiration in the outside world around her, “Open fields, the ocean, music, my children and sunsets. I love beautiful scenes and encapsulating the magic of childhood amongst those scenes.”
Lastly, a few cheeky questions -
We live in the beautiful hills of Perth in Western Australia and are so lucky to be surrounded by nature--kangaroos on our doorstep, hundreds of birds and other wildlife--but our dream is to live by the ocean, something we hope to pursue in the coming years.
What are your favourite activities to do together as a family?
We love getting on the road and exploring our beautiful countryside. It's been something my husband Tye and I did before we had children and something we want to continue to do as our family grows. We are lucky with Tye's work roster to be able to get away for a few days at a time and have loved spending time all over the north and south of Western Australia. When we are at home we enjoy cooking together, reading books and cosying up on the couch watching movies--something we've been doing a lot of this Winter.
Are you the cook at home? Favourite mid week go-to meal?
My husband is a FIFO [fly in fly out] worker so while he is away I cook (because I have to ha!) but when he is home, he's the main cook. We both enjoy cooking and our favourite cuisines are Italian and Mexican. Our kids aren't big on eating meat so I usually steam a few different veggies and a fried egg if I'm feeling lazy. When I'm feeling more adventurous, they love a good pasta or vegetarian chilli con carne.
What special [clothing] pieces do you think are important for young children?
I always try to buy simple yet timeless pieces for my children. Items that will get worn over and over again yet still be passed down to future babes. I love clothes that they can play, eat and get dirty in. I think it's so special that a piece of clothing can hold so many memories and when pulled out years later can give me nostalgic feelings.
